The brother of the Remote Explosive, the Proximity Explosive has been around since the early days of the murder taxi as it seemed is was the most effective way of removing murder taxis from the battlefield. It seemed that this would be the route that I alone would take while everyone else hefted Swarm Launchers (which were much worse back then) and the all powerful Forge Gun.
Eventually, Faction Warfare would re-open it's doors as they introduced a new battleground where you gained not ISK, but Loyalty Points, a new form of currency. With these battles came it's bugs and glitches that needed to be ironed out.
After some time when the battles were a little less buggy, I decided to help my team in Gallente FW. Upon laying out a minefield, I was forced back to my merc quarters with a message saying I was removed due to "friendly fire".
Much later and rather recently, I fought for Minmatar FW and, hearing the rumor that Proxies were fixed, I laid out a minefield for a LAV that was harassing us at our home objective.
This time I distinctly remember someone looking at me while I was laying my minefield. As I go back to the supply depot, I am once again forced back to my merc quarters, this time losing a ton of gained standing (before I had such a small amount, it was negligible. This time, my standing of Rank 6 diminished to Rank 5 due to "friendly fire").
I raged and was prepared to witch hunt my troll-of-a-teammate who got his kicks and giggles from removing me (and standings hard work) through a failure in the system's inability to recognize the person at fault and the real victim.
I was prepared to write a thread up about this incident earlier, however, I tried to recall from memory who else has used Proxy mines or even mention proxy mines on the forums. I came up dry. Once again, I believed I was still a lone warrior who used these archaic, broken devices with the troll's full intention for me to come to the forums to raise hell and high water over it, only to be put on display as a laughing stock of the community, forever remembered as the foolish mercenary who shall be mocked and labeled a moron.
(*Licks spreading knife* Is that thick enough?)
Right. Anyways. After that, I just simply deleted my proxy fits, never to touch proxies again.
Fast forward a couple days and I cross paths and squad with Cross Atu. After a couple of matches, I explain to him what happened and was wondering if I should even bother posting a thread since Proximity Mines seems to be the last thing anyone can remember and it seems like I'm the only one using them, or rather "used" them. He listened and recommended I make a thread (and here it is!).
After some time, I started running into others that used what seemed to be Remote Explosives, but they were throwing them in the road. Sure enough, enemy LAVs would confirm that not only were they Proxies, but I was not the only one using them. Finally, browsing through the equipment scan profile thread, I saw the community responding to it, requesting Proximity Mines be extremely hard to detect or be flat out 0 dB. Which finally pushed me to finally create this thread.
SOLUTION:
Rework proximity mines.
Unfortunately, the solution I have basically creates the proximity mine to have the same functionality in FW as it does in Public matches. How it led up to it was first removing the damage and punish options from a Proxy Mine explosion. This would prevent from trolls running up to a friendly proximity mine, blowing it up, and getting a friendly teammate kickbanned from the match as well as that teammate suffering a standing loss for a crime he did not commit.
However, this could lead to the troll from before picking up proxy mines of his own and placing them at the feet of unsuspecting friendlies and create chaos because he is unable to get kicked from damage done by proxies at the same time being able to be punished for his actions.
That lead to the thought of not allowing friendly fire to set off Proxy Mines in FW. And leads us to Public Match behavior Proximity Mines in Faction Warfare.
Yes, I know there is a ton of stuff being discussed: Equipment Bandwidth, Equipment Scan Profile, and now this. I don't know which change will happen when, but I believe a change here will allow people to add these to the list a viable options to use in Factional Warfare.
